Breakfast with Renate Scherrer
Exploring the Dark Side.
The challenge of being an inspiring leader to progressively diverse, multigenerational and highly educated teams in increasingly virtual, digital and global organisations will relentlessly test the resilience and character of future leaders.
In fact, the increased stress and complexity associated with this will probably leave countless leaders operating from their dark side on a regular basis.
The dark side of leadership is an ongoing pattern of behaviour exhibited by a leader that results in overall negative organisational outcomes based on the interactions between the leader, follower and the environment. Organisational goals, morale and follower satisfaction are thwarted through the abuse of power and self-interest of the leader.
By understanding the dark side of leadership from past failures and empirical evidence, leaders can be an advantageous position to limit the long-term negative outcomes for organisations and their stakeholders.
In an effort to understand and manage the potential manifestation and disastrous impact of toxic leadership, the following will be explored during this discussion.
• What is it?
• Who is at risk of displaying it?
• Where do we typically find it?
• When should we do something about it?
• How to deal with it?
